Taipei offers some of the finest Chinese cuisine in the world. There are good restaurants with fair prices on almost every street and tourists can find a good meal without difficulty. For gourmets, every major hotel boats excellent Chinese restaurants. For budget travellers, there are numerous fast-food outlets, countless snack centres (generally in the basements of department stores) and a variety of light meals available at night markets.
Local Fare
You'll find plenty of restaurants competing with each other to serve the best delicacies from Hunan, Yunnan, Xinjiang, Fujian and every province in between. It's also well worth asking local residents where to find the best Taiwanese eateries, of which there are many.
Chinese Tea Houses
For something different, try to find a ride up the surrounding mountains for some wonderful tea (around the Chinese Cultural University or near the town of Mu-cha). Besides offering a wide range of locally-grown and Chinese tea varieties, many teahouses also serve set lunches and dinners featuring local specialties such as 'earth' chicken and mountain vegetables. Come especially at night- the alfresco dining by candlelight along the leafy terraces is made all the more memorable by the gorgeous views of Taipei below.

Taipei has restaurants offering European and American cuisines, as well as non-Chinese Asian fare.

You'll find excellent Japanese restaurants (especially in the Linsen North Road area)

Beach Activities
Chinshan Beach
doubles as a noisy family beach (complete with piped music) and a hot springs resort. Just behind the beach is a large park popular with locals for barbecues and an indoor hot-springs swimming pool (look for the blue glass pyramids on the roof). Everything is closed on Mondays. There are regular buses from Taipei North Bus Station (next to Taipei Main Railway Station) straight to the beach. A Quiet Beach For some beach bumming without the crowds, try the very large beach on the opposite side of the headland. From Chinshan Beach walk along the coast, past the harbour, then cross the park on the headland above. The beach is on the far side of the headland. There's a further tiny, very secluded beach near the end of the headland, reached by a steep scramble down the cliff. It's a great spot, but be aware of strong currents.
