Beach Activities
Chinshan Beach
doubles as a noisy family beach (complete with piped music) and a hot springs resort. Just behind the beach is a large park popular with locals for barbecues and an indoor hot-springs swimming pool (look for the blue glass pyramids on the roof). Everything is closed on Mondays. There are regular buses from Taipei North Bus Station (next to Taipei Main Railway Station) straight to the beach.  A Quiet Beach For some beach bumming without the crowds, try the very large beach on the opposite side of the headland. From Chinshan Beach walk along the coast, past the harbour, then cross the park on the headland above. The beach is on the far side of the headland. There's a further tiny, very secluded beach near the end of the headland, reached by a steep scramble down the cliff. It's a great spot, but be aware of strong currents.

Hot Spring Fun
There are a number of hot springs in the area of Taipei and enjoying at least one when here, is one of the ‘must do’ activities that we highly recommend. Hsin Peitou is one of the more popular spots for this, but there are a lot more equally as pleasant. For details, ask at your hotel for one closest to you, on arrival.

Surfing
For this type of activity head to Ilan County, 90 minutes by train from Taipei. Get off at Tahsi (Note: only a couple of trains each morning stop here, so check the schedule first). Turn right along the main coast road to Honeymoon Bay. The surfing industry is taking off here and if you are looking for somewhere to do it, this is as good a spot as any. Note: Non-surfers should stay in shallow water, as the currents here are strong.

Cycling
There are a number of interesting cycle routes worth exploring if you are the energetic type. We have been told that Alan's Bike located at 40 Roosevelt Road, Section 5, Taipei offers cycling tours as well as selling spare parts for bikes. We suggest you contact the place by phone on: +886 (0)2 2933 4319 for more details. A great spot for doing your own thing on a bike can be found at the Dan Shui Riverside Cycle Path. This well-maintained path begins at the south (inland) side of the Tam Sui MRT station and runs all the way to the Hung Shu Lin MRT stop. In addition to offering great views of the town of Pa Li and Kuan Yin Mountain on the other side of the river, it provides access to one of Taiwan's few remaining mangrove swamps-a tract of land now designated a nature reserve. The route is also popular with joggers and walkers; a leisurely stroll from one end to the other takes about an hour.
